THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

While it is often true that wisdom comes with age, we make a mistake if we assume younger people who are Christ-followers have nothing to “bring to the table” in our gatherings.  One might even suggest that the long-held seniority system of the airlines has the potential to be wrongly carried over into fellowships which are groups designed to be a blessing to believers of all ages.

It is probably safe to say that most if not all of us have known a few older people who, through their actions, show a lack of learned biblical wisdom. It is also likely true that we have known people who might be said to have “an old head on young shoulders,” men and women who are “wise beyond their years.”

It is no doubt true that the Bible says real wisdom and gray hairs tend to come together. That said, the Word also tells us to “let no one despise you for your youth.” Perhaps both these verses might be something to remember the next time we gather, as Christians, with those who represent more than a single generation.

“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 ESV
