Culture vs. Holy Spirit: Who’s Guiding Your Beliefs?

We see a lot of ideas and practices on the job these days which are anything but biblical. It is always a temptation to let the culture around us determine our belief system. We may even use the Bible to try to justify that system. This is a dangerous thing to do.

Some believers leave so much room for varying interpretations of the Word of God that black and white seems to be “gray all over.” They are uncomfortable with the absolutes that the Bible clearly endorses, and so they either try to minimize the discussion of them or claim that what seems absolute really isn’t.

These people often argue that our culture is far more important in understanding Scripture than what they would consider a wrongheaded approach based on supposedly unsophisticated literalism.

The problem is that our very fallen culture is a terrible substitute for both the Holy Spirit and wise godly counsel inspired by Him.

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12 (ESV)
