An airplane can have everything else it needs to fly, but if it is missing its engines, it is safe to say that airplane will never get off the ground. We can have all the human relationships we need in this life yet can still be missing the one that will finally allow us to really live, to truly fly. Human beings were created by God with an innate desire to find a perfectly whole answer to the need for completion. We cannot rest until and unless we find that answer in Christ. Pascal’s “God-shaped hole” really does exist in the hearts of each and every one of us. It cannot be filled except by the One who is “more and different” than anyone we have ever known or ever will know, among the people in our lives. We need more than other people, even other children of God, can give us. That “more” is what God can give us if we are open to receiving it from Him and Him alone.
