Striving for Perfection: A Reflection on Work and Grace

Ever work with a perfectionist at your airline? It is not usually a lot of fun because the person who is trying to be perfect in their own strength, which is the definition of the word “perfectionist,” often tends to be miserable, and “misery loves company!”

Flawlessness and God are synonymous. But our idea of perfection and His are two very different things. On the fallen human level it is sometimes seen, consciously or unconsciously, as a state towards to be frantically working. “Perfectionism” is the result and it is sinful as well because it depends on our fallen nature’s attempt to be as God . Only God is truly perfect, and His perfection is innate. In other words, He does not need to achieve anything to have it. To gain it by the effort of the flesh is impossible. When we try to attain to this state in this way our own pride is often the hidden motivation behind the attempt. Instead, we need to receive the true state of perfection God offers in Christ.

“For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” -Hebrews 10:14 (ESV)
