The Flesh and the Spirit: A Daily Struggle

Flying around the world to cities where we feel anonymous, surrounded by co-workers who “work hard but play hard” can tempt us to forget who we are as redeemed children of God. This is especially likely if there are “life issues” within us which we have never really faced.

Some of us have been to places where, after enduring terrible pain we feel we did not deserve, we have been tempted to blame God and walk away from Him. For a moment we think of our old way of existing, as being somehow easier or better than facing the daily struggles that are part and parcel of the Christian walk. So, we look back at the days we knew before Jesus came into our lives imagining something better was there for us. Usually such musings, thanks be to God, do not last very long. This is because they tend to wilt when we also remember the terrible meaninglessness of those days.

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Galatians 5:17 (ESV)
