The Beauty of Divine Mystery: Embracing the Unknowable

Can two contradictory things both be right? Yes, and the term used to describe when this happens is “paradox.”

Can the Bible sometimes present things that even the concept of paradox doesn’t cover? Yes, and we fallen, finite beings call that “divine mystery.”

Paradoxes are something that is apparent in many aspects of the Word of God. This is often true with things in the Scriptures that non-believers would call “contradictions.” Many of these can be shown to be non-contradictory simply by reading the entire Bible in its proper context.

As for the rest, I find the vast majority of these things are also paradoxical, not contradictory (for the few things I have not yet found to be that way I trust that my limited, and sometimes warped, human reason is not to be trusted when dealing with a God who must, by definition, embody infinite perfection and absolute truth to be worthy of the title God.)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)
